[BLOG] GALENTINE'S DAY

By Jennifer Pawluk, Communications Specialist

Galentine's Day may be a fictional holiday celebrated on February 13 by the characters of Parks and Recreation. Yet, Leslie Knope (who is played by Amy Poehler) was on to something when she declared: "Oh, it's only the best day of the year." Read more about Galentine's Day courtesy of Bustle.

One day a year to celebrate female friendship is wonderful, but every day is Galentine's Day at Balmoral Hall School. Here, girls always celebrate girls. Indeed, as a girls' school, we nurture lasting friendships among our students.

National Coalition of Girls' Schools (NCGS) reports the following:

"By subtracting boys an all-girls' education adds opportunities. At a girls' school, a girl occupies every role: every part in the play, every seat on the student government, every position on every team. Not only does she have a wealth of avenues for self-exploration and development; she has a wealth of peer role models."

In fact, I witnessed this proof of peers firsthand recently as a teacher shared with me the work of her student advisory group. These students from grades 9 to 12 were asked to compliment each other in the spirit of kindness during a Wellness Week activity in late January. Each student in Senior School was given a paper heart with notes from her peers. Later, hundreds of these notes were hung in the atrium at Balmoral Hall. To me, and many others, this exhibition is a powerful reminder of the positive impact that BH girls have.

Their thoughtfulness is truly inspiring. It is rooted in mutual understanding, trust, and support. Regardless of any interpersonal conflicts they find themselves in, this holds true in my experience.

So how do these friendships withstand the test of time?

Well, when I met classmates from Balmoral Hall School's Class of 1966 at their 50th reunion last fall, their connectedness moved me deeply. I was awed by the strength of their friendship. Listening to them tell their stories empowered me as a communicator.

This camaraderie is quite rare, and I am humbled to experience it every day through my work at Balmoral Hall.

Happy Galentine's Day to every BH girl past and present!
