The theme of Wellness Day, January 25, 2017, at Balmoral Hall School was "Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds." As a day of action, it was embraced wholeheartedly by BH girls, who enjoyed a rare mufti day in athletic wear. Activities involved Zumba, yoga, and other workouts throughout the day. Nutritious snacks were provided courtesy of Balmoral Hall Parent Association (BHPA). Most remarkable, however, are the presentations that made this school day such an empowering one.
Centre for Learning (CFL) faculty coordinated an exposition for the third year in a row with an emphasis on cognition as it relates to mindset, learning, and more. Drawing on research from American psychologist JoAnn Deak, PhD, each sessions had a distinct theme. "Hug The Monster" gave students opportunities to embrace challenges. "Stretching Your Rubber Band" allowed them to try new things. Additionally, a 20-minute "Brain Break" offered a shift in focus with a chance to re-energize through movement.
Junior and Middle School students took part in these activities in the morning, while Senior School students participated in the exposition during the afternoon. With an emphasis on fun, laughter, and shared experiences, Wellness Day is a success. The conversations that are had leave a lasting impact at Balmoral Hall.
This year, in particular, grades 9 to 12 engaged in such a conversation with spokeswomen from Orange Daisy Project, a social action campaign to support the mental health of teen girls.
