Judith Steek is Director of Arts and Culture at Balmoral Hall School.

In Summer 2021, Judith Steek transitioned into the role of Director of Arts & Culture, following her great passion for the arts and her deep-rooted knowledge of our ever-evolving school community.
“As Principal of Junior School for 25 years, the opportunity for all students to learn and create in Benidickson Center for Arts & Design in Fall 2019 was very exciting,” Mrs. Steek recalls. “Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic happened just as we started using these beautiful spaces in 2019–2020. In the role of Director of Arts & Culture, I have felt my interest in the arts return with the excitement of possibilities.”
“As I prepared for the new school year, I felt nervous and excited at the same time,” continues Mrs. Steek. “I was a little unsure of my role, as this is a new position, and, in a way, I felt like a student again. I looked forward to new learning opportunities as I saw great potential for the arts curriculum at Balmoral Hall School.”

Perhaps most exciting, she shares, were the prospects of guest artists teaching and engaging our students as well as making new connections with alumnae, parents, and community partners.
For example, Mrs. Steek coordinated Balmoral Hall School activities for Orange Shirt Day, held on September 29, 2021, in advance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30.
Additionally, by supporting mentorships for Senior School students, Mrs. Steek now has the opportunity to reconnect with many of her former students whose learning journeys she guided in Junior School.
“This career transition has created an awareness for me of the many connections that are available to students and faculty within our Balmoral Hall School community, as well as the greater Winnipeg region,” Mrs. Steek notes. “I am enjoying reaching out to various partners in the arts, mentorship, and summer programming. The possibilities for growth and integration of art, design, and culture have only just begun!”

We welcomed Mrs. Nancy MacTavish to Balmoral Hall School as Principal of Junior School in Summer 2021. She prides herself on being a lifelong learner, and, throughout her career, she has developed a deep knowledge of the elementary curriculum. Mrs. MacTavish believes in bringing teachers, parents, and community partners together to achieve shared goals.
When not in school, Mrs. MacTavish enjoys spending time with her family. Often you will find her outdoors on a run or at home reading a good book. She not only encourages others, but also pushes herself to reach her own goals; one of her biggest accomplishments was to qualify and run in a Boston Marathon, which she did in 2015.
