GRADE 9 DESIGN PROJECT AN EXPLORATION OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE & URBAN PLANNING

By Mia, Grade 9

In mid-February, the Grade 9s were fortunate to spend a full week exploring the field of sustainable architecture and urban planning.

We had the chance to learn from the experts at No.9, a Toronto-based arts organization that uses art and design to bring awareness to environmental concerns, as we familiarized ourselves with our community and how many different possibilities there could be to redesign and improve our neighbourhood.

Through the process of investigating and collaborating with others, we divided the area around Balmoral Hall into different zones. The input from our mentors helped guide the ideas for our sites. Through sketching, prototyping, learning about the nine pillars (from waste management to transportation) and modelling, we began thinking outside the box about the future of our neighbourhood.

We quickly realized how much time and effort goes into architectural planning and the importance of building our models to scale. This experience has sparked an interest in many students about possible future careers. My fellow classmates and I can all agree that this opportunity has made us think in a more sustainable way, helped us become more familiar with our community, and was a great change of pace in our schedule. With all our hard work, we hope that our creative ideas and input will be considered in future community plans!
