Canadian music inspires international students!

Last term, some of the Grade 10 international students had the opportunity to study the English language and Canadian culture by exploring Canadian music by singer/songwriters such as Great Big Sea, Stompin’ Tom Conners, and Neil Young, just to name a few.
After examining how the songwriters and their music were influenced by Canada, the girls got to work on their own musical composition. They began brainstorming answers to the questions: What does Canada mean to you as an international student, as a girl, and as a traveller? They came up with a lovely folk composition entitled “She”, which is a wonderfully positive and encouraging piece of music for all those international girls who travel to Canada to attend Balmoral Hall School.

It was wonderful to see the excellent learning opportunity that lyrical revision, collaboration, and experimentation can provide to an ESL student.

The lyrics of their song are as follows:

“She”

By Grade 10 ESL – 2014/2015

She came from somewhere else
To go out and find herself
She faces off with the troubles in life
And she takes off for Canada

She flew from her eastern world
She’s a brave and talented girl
The challenge of being alone in a world
That seems so strange and cold

She is finding her way
She will fight and she’ll stay
She is stronger today
Hey, hey, hey

The air is so sweet
And her voice is so free
Walking out with her guitar on the street
And she’s playing for people she meets

Friends are warm and sweet
Canadians out on the street
Make her their friend and let her feel normal
And become like family

She is finding her way
She will fight and she’ll stay
She is stronger today
Hey, hey, hey

She came from somewhere else
To go out and find herself
She faces off with the troubles in life
And she takes off for Canada
