Hon. Patricia Bovey ‘66

Patricia Bovey is a former Senator of Canada (2016–2023) and Director Emerita of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. A distinguished art historian, museologist, author, professor, and arts advocate, she has made lasting contributions to Canada’s cultural landscape. A dedicated community volunteer, she has served on numerous boards, including the University of Manitoba’s Board of Governors and Emily Carr University’s Board. She currently serves on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, the Roberta Bondar Foundation, and the Confederation Centre of the Arts.
Her publications include Western Voices in Canadian Art (2023), Pat Martin Bates: Balancing on a Thread, and Don Proch: Masking and Mapping. Her career began at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1970, followed by roles as Director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and later the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She founded and led St. Boniface Hospital’s Buhler Gallery and taught at both the University of Victoria and the University of Winnipeg in public administration, art history, cultural resource management, and curatorial studies.
During her Senate tenure, she championed the arts, leading special exhibitions and contributing to the Cultural Diplomacy report. She advanced key legislation, including the Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate Bill (Royal Assent 2024) and the Declaration Respecting the Essential Role of Artists and Creative Expression in Canada. 
Her many honours include the King Charles III Coronation Medal, Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, Canada 125 Medal, Winnipeg Arts Council’s Investors Making a Difference Award, CMA Award of Distinguished Service, and the YM/YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Arts & Culture. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (UK), the Canadian Museums Association, and Distinguished Financial Specialists, and holds honorary doctorates from the University of Manitoba, St. John’s College, the University of Winnipeg, and York University.
