In the debate and public speaking program the students focus on the development of their speaking, listening and analytic skills and their ability to exhibit the qualities of a critical thinker and competent speaker.
They are required to make public speaking presentations such as persuasive speeches and interpretive readings. They also research specific resolutions related to the world they live in and prepare arguments to debate those resolutions. The focus of these classes is to provide the students with the skills that will enable them to stand up in front of an audience and speak with confidence.
The students have the opportunity to further their experiences in debating and public speaking by participating in competitions locally, nationally and internationally. Just this past year one of our students participated in the World’s Public Speaking Competition in Australia, finishing fourth in the world!
This year, one of our debating students finished first at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition, and another finished in the top five of the Canadian National debating championships. Both girls are going on to represent Canada, and Balmoral Hall at the World’s Championship in South Africa.
