OLIVIA MEIER ’17 MADE CANADIAN PARA BADMINTON HISTORY
Our congratulations to Balmoral Hall School lifer Olivia Meier ’17, who made history this summer as the first Canadian to compete in Para badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games!
“Badminton was the second-last or last sport announced for the Games. So, I found out mid-July and left (for Tokyo) at the end of August. Early in the morning, the executive director of Badminton Canada called me and told me the news,” shared Olivia when asked about this dream come true during an interview on Balmoral Hall School’s podcast, What Makes You Say That?. “I started freaking out, and my sister and parents were super excited, and then my whole extended family knew within a half hour. I got so many calls and texts. Everyone was so excited for me.”
“The first thing that comes to mind is stepping onto the court in my first match,” Olivia recalled, reflecting on this memorable milestone. “Hearing them call my name, I was super nervous, but I tried to take in the atmosphere and play my very best. Also, Closing Ceremonies — growing up, you watch these ceremonies. Being there and living through that was amazing.”
A full-time student at University of Manitoba, Olivia is in her final year of undergraduate study and is in the process of applying for law school.
As a member of the national badminton team, she is looking forward to travelling again internationally for competitions once the COVID-19 pandemic ends.
