On February 12, 2020, Lauren and I participated in the Angus Reid cross-examination tournament at St. Paul's High School. We have both attended Balmoral Hall since Junior School, and we have learned many debate techniques and styles during our journey through the debate and public speaking program. After learning about cross-examination style in term one, we identified this tournament as a great opportunity to put our skills to the test and gain experience in our first formal debate tournament.
The topic of the tournament was: "Be it resolved that Canada should invest in nuclear energy." We began preparing for this tournament the same way we had for Canadian parliamentary debates in the past; we defined the resolution, established our points, and decided our positions. We had approximately two weeks to build our constructive case and develop a full understanding of what investing in nuclear energy meant for the people, communities, and government of Canada. The main difference between cross-examination and Canadian parliamentary style is that at the end of every constructive speech, you are questioned for three minutes by an opposing team member. It sounds intimidating, and it was challenging; however, our classes with Mrs. Balcaen in term one fully prepared us for this experience.
For our first formal tournament, I am very proud of how Lauren and I debated. We gained an extensive amount of experience that requires you to extend your knowledge beyond that gained in class. I encourage anyone interested in public speaking or debate to give it a try. There are so many styles and opportunities in the program that can provide you with fundamental presentation skills, and it's all available right here at Balmoral Hall.
Coach's note: Congratulations to Lauren and Breanna for embracing the opportunity to compete in this niche style of debate. Lauren was also the recipient of the award for 9th overall individual speaker.
