On January 9, 2020, grades 5, 7, and 8 students were lucky to have the chance to hear from architect Julie Cormie, who gave a fascinating presentation on her field while explaining the process of design from meeting with prospective clients to preparing final plans before structures are built. This aligned perfectly with our focus on empathic design. Additionally, she talked about her use of laser cutting and 3D printing in architecture. It was wonderful to see the real-life applications of these two technologies that we have in our design lab! It was especially useful to Grade 5, who had started their "dream bedroom" project using Tinkercad earlier in the week.
Ms Cormie explained that her passion for architecture had originated from a love of both science and art as her interest in many different subject areas is helpful to her career in architecture. To have a strong female role model speak to us about this career path opened the girls' eyes to this possibility. Thank you to Matheson for arranging for Ms Cormie to visit us, and thank you, Ms Cormie, for making time to come to stop by Balmoral Hall while on your family visit from London!
