MEET THE FACULTY: KINDERGARTEN

Mrs. Thomson ‒

My connection to Balmoral Hall School started as a parent 20 years ago. For the past 16 years, I have had the amazing opportunity to share my global view of education with Junior School families. I believe strongly in the importance of early years education with a science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) focus. If we want to see more women in the STEM fields, we need to teach girls to love learning these subjects at a young age. In 2019, I was honoured to receive Manitoba’s Teaching Excellence Award as well as a Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM, Certificate of Achievement. As a teacher, inspiring girls to become lifelong learners continues to be my passion. Guiding girls to become curious, resilient, and globally aware, I provide them with purposeful learning opportunities through dynamic programming that flows from and responds to their interests.

Mrs. West ‒

At age 17, I qualified for Atlanta’s Olympic Summer Games in 1996. Two years later, I accepted a full athletic scholarship to Arizona State University to further pursue my studies while swimming. I was captain of the women's swim team my junior and senior years and helped lead the team from being in the top 30 to a top-10 finish at NCAA Championships my senior year. Upon graduating, I spent five years living in Toronto, teaching and coaching, before our family decided to return to our roots in Winnipeg. When the opportunity arose a few years ago to teach Junior Kindergarten at Balmoral Hall School, I thought it would be a great fit, and it is! As our class sizes changed, I spent one year teaching Junior Kindergarten before transferring to Kindergarten. The confidence and self-esteem I experienced leading an all-girls swim team in college are like the feelings I experience here, and it gives me great pleasure to teach girls as they set out to become caring and confident young women.
