MEET THE FACULTY: DR. DOERKSEN

Music has always played a significant role in my life. My love for music was enhanced through passionate educators. I now have the joy of working as the elementary music specialist, early years choral conductor, handbell director, and International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) coordinator at Balmoral Hall School. Prior to teaching in schools, I served as a music director in churches in Manitoba and Arizona involving multiple choirs for all ages, musical dramas, weekly specials, and holiday choral concerts.

I hold a Bachelor of Music Education, majoring in voice and organ, Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctorate of Education. I also have the privilege of serving as a team leader for school site visits across Canada and the United States through the International Baccalaureate Educators Network, as well as leading workshops in-person and online in inquiry and music.

Balmoral Hall is a place where students and faculty are encouraged to share their voice and take ownership of their learning. I enjoy collaborating with creative and motivated faculty members who daily challenge their students' thinking in an inquiry-based learning environment. Students are encouraged to develop their creative thinking skills as they collaborate to make music. This fall, we had a group of students create and share a song using instrument iPad apps.

The central idea for Junior School music is that musical expression may be passed down through time. My goal is to see each student grow as a lifelong learner so they can share their musical expression with others. The ability to perform and enjoy music are pleasures that last a lifetime.
