Junior Debate Team, British Parliamentary Qualifiers (October 2019)

STUDENTS BEGIN DEBATE IN BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY STYLE

By Carissa (Nikkel) Balcaen '02, Faculty

Students have completed the first two debate tournaments of the school year, both in the British parliamentary style. Both our Senior and Junior teams performed well and were resilient while competing in this very challenging impromptu form of debate. In this style, there are two proposition and two opposition teams, all competing in the same room; however, each team prepares independently. Think of this as a coalition where two political parties support a policy, but refuse to work together on a permanent basis and form one political party.

Sophie S., Irina Z., Lindsay C., and Lauren B. competed in The Asper Cup at Gray Academy on Oct. 6/19. They tackled the topics of one's ownership of information about themselves on the Internet, legalizing hate speech, and giving rebel groups political party status for laying down their arms. Obviously, these are very difficult topics, and we would like to congratulate Lindsay and Lauren for placing as the sixth team in the tournament. Lindsay also received awards as the top BH speaker and fourth individual speaker overall.

In strong form, the Junior debaters attended a similar provincial qualifying tournament on Oct. 16/19 at St. John's–Ravenscourt. Asmara A.I., Jozi O., Chloe R., and Janet V. competed in their first British parliamentary tournament with grades 8 and 9 students. Their resolutions were based on the concepts of children performing in reality TV shows, performance-enhancing drugs in sports, and abolishing university tuition. The experiential learning that occurred at this tournament was profound. In addition, we wish to congratulate top BH speaker Jozi O. and her partner Janet V., who have qualified to represent Manitoba at Canadian British Parliamentary Debate Championships in Saskatoon in early December.

Well done, all!
