Story by CBC.ca
CBC has released their listing of the Manitoba Future 40. Two BH Alumnae, Iqra Tariq '16, and Carmyn Aleshka '96 have been recognized for their dedication and innovation. We are so proud of them, and all our alumnae for their many achievements.

Iqra Tariq

Iqra is a Winnipeg born Pakistani Canadian who is a second year science student at the University of Manitoba taking pre-pharmacy requisites. She is the current Media Director at the University of Manitoba’s Muslim Student Association. A passionate learner, volunteer, and Balmoral Hall alumna, Iqra participated in provincial science fairs for the majority of her schooling and was a nationals finalist at the Canada-Wide Science Festival in 2016.

Iqra had the honour of sitting on The 2017 Project Pulse Health Care Conference University Panel, presenting to high school students on the subject of Pharmacy. She also mentored at the University of Winnipeg, in the Department of Chemistry, where she researched a path to alternative drug discovery against bacteria, fungi, and in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. Through these involvements, Iqra continues to interact and engage young students and learners into the field of science and proves her commitment to community and STEM.

Carmyn Aleshka

Carmyn founded The Upside Down Tree, in which she has raised more than one million dollars in four years. Carmyn has leveraged her business experience, resources, and connections to take a very hands-on approach to philanthropy. In one night, Carmyn was able to raise $400,000 for Rainbow Railroad, allowing the organization to help 81 LGBT2SQ people escape state-sponsored violence.

On top of raising much-needed funds for several charities, she also helps move them forward. As a board member of The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, she helped create The Innovators program to engage young professionals in making donations to the foundation.
