Middle School Experiential Learning Week 2017

MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING WEEK

Jennifer Pawluk, Communications Specialist

From September 18–22, Middle School classrooms were emptier than usual as students in grades 6, 7, and 8 participated in a delightful Experiential Learning Week.

This was a unique opportunity for BH girls to learn by doing as they visited sites such as Manitoba Museum, St. Boniface Library, Art City, Oak Hammock Marsh, Siloam Mission, Neechi Commons, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Mentoring Artists for Women's Art, and more.

Additionally, guest lecturers, such as software developer Serena Vandersteen, brought their knowledge and expertise to Balmoral Hall with a variety of in-class presentations.

Experiential Learning Week concluded with an emphasis on outdoor education as Middle School went camping.

Grade 6 learned survival skills, climbing techniques, and archery at Camp Arnes. Grade 7 ventured out on the lakes and trails near Minaki Yurt Adventures. Grade 8, meanwhile, demonstrated their survival instincts, and their teamwork, by building shelters in the woods at Moose Lake.

"Outdoor (educational) experiences teach students about our place in the natural world," says Barret Miller, Special Projects Interpreter at FortWhyte Alive, "giv(ing) students a solid foundation for exploring their role as citizens of both the human and the natural communities.

"This leads to care and concern for one another, for their communities, and for the world."

Many thanks to Middle School faculty for mentoring their students throughout a truly exceptional week of experiential learning.
