SOCIAL MEDIA IS CONNECTION

Chris Allinotte, Communications Specialist

Being in the communications office offers a unique opportunity. On any given day, a three year old will be discovering the hidden picture in a collection of shells, blocks or beads in our Child Care room, someone in grade six will be using a Dremel tool to buff the edges off of her most recent 3D model, and a student in AP Chemistry will be seeing the results of her calculations come to life before her eyes.  Beyond our halls, accomplishments by our alumnae become a steady flow of examples for our BH girls to look up to.

When we have visitors to the school, we often hear about the "feeling" of being in our school. It's an intangible quality that describes the warmth or happiness they see expressed by our students.

Walking through the hallways, you might find the displays from Heritage Fair, a group working on their Sphero program together, making the little robots dance around the lounge furniture, or an impromptu study group, laughing and learning together outside the computer labs.

Where social media comes in is the ability to share snapshots of these moments with our extended community. It's being able to tap someone on the shoulder and say, "You've got to see this!"

With the available tools for sharing photos, videos and traditional stories, it's easier than ever to try and describe the indescribable. We can capture perfect moments of exuberant play in the back yard on Instagram, bring our community right to our door via streaming on Facebook Live, or share the accomplishments of our alumnae by boosting their announcements on Twitter.

This year, we've tried to amplify our school news by using Twitter more often, and recently, we've taken the conversation a step further. Two of our classes are now using Twitter to share their classroom activities in a more direct way.

We also have dedicated Twitter and Instagram accounts for BH Beginnings, whose posts are sure to warm your heart, and our BH Blazers Hockey team, which allows them to take part of the larger JWHL and Prep Hockey social media world. University Guidance also provides snapshots of school visits, and outreach activities that are helping our girls make informed post-secondary decisions.

It's a great time to be a part of the BH community, and a privilege to bring the moments of life at BH to you. If you haven't followed us yet, I invite you to follow us. This is an extensive list, so don't feel you need to jump in all at once – pick one and join the conversation!

P.S. As of this writing, we’re just 400 “likes” behind SJR on Facebook – if you haven’t liked our page yet, now would be a great time to check it out!
