ALUMNAE EXPAND BH GIRLS' CAREER AWARENESS

By Jennifer McDonald, University Guidance Advisor

In our first career awareness presentation of the year, Grade 8 students heard from Major Amanda Aldous '02, who is a Royal Canadian Air Force Logistics Officer. Major Aldous described her progression from Balmoral Hall School to Royal Military College of Canada, studying political science, and then to Dalhousie University for her Master of Public Administration. She also shared experiences from her training and deployment with Canadian Armed Forces.

Many of the life lessons she reflected on are valuable in terms of any course of study after high school, as perseverance was a recurring theme.

Throughout her life, she questioned herself, as we all do. She questioned her abilities, her intentions, and her path. There will always be varied challenges in life. Major Aldous noted: “Failing is a part of learning.” She explained that 14 years after her graduation from Balmoral Hall School, with all the experiences she has had, including some struggles, she is quite proud of her decisions to persevere through obstacles. There have been many times when she has thought to herself: “Yes, this is why I am here!” Grade 8 students had many thoughtful questions that Major Aldous addressed.
