FIRST JUNIOR COMPETITIVE DEBATE TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS

By Amy Mittal, Grade 8

After three weeks of preparation, Balmoral Hall School's junior competitive debate team participated in the first debate tournament of the year on October 5. The tournament proved to be very exciting as we debated that "Edward Snowden is a hero." Important themes such as national security and the infringement of privacy were discussed.

From Grade 7, Lucy Christopher and Lucy McDougall entered as a team. I formed a team with Grade 9 student Irina Znamirowski. Also in Grade 9, Lauren Burns and Lindsay Cogan competed together for this event.

We all did exceptionally well, as we gained a lot of knowledge about the resolution as well as some great persuasion techniques.

Individually, in the novice category, Lucy M. placed 4th while Lucy C. placed 1st. Together, they placed 1st as a team. Individually, in the open category, Irina placed 6th while Lauren received an award as the top debater from Balmoral Hall, placing 5th. Irina and I placed 6th of 28 teams in the open category, and Lauren and Lindsay placed 2nd. We were very pleased with these results. Congratulations to all!

Special thanks to Mrs. Carissa Balcaen '02 for helping us to prepare for this tournament, as it would not have been possible without you. Also, thank you to Barrett Arbour (Grade 10) for volunteering to judge at this tournament. It was an amazing debate and a great learning experience!

I encourage anyone interested in debate to attend one of our practices, as we would love to have you join us!
