Pop can cameras + light sensitive paper = ART!

ARTIST IN SCHOOL SUPPORTS FILM PROJECT

By Kristina Karlsson, Visual Arts Specialist
This year, we have been fortunate to receive a grant from Manitoba Arts Council's Artists in the Schools Residencies Program.

This has allowed us to welcome Ms Lasha Mowchun, who has introduced students to many image-capturing technologies, including: Super 8mm and digital stop motion filmmaking; low-tech photography processes inspired by traditional black and white dark room photography; script writing; general filmmaking techniques; and editing short films.
A highlight so far has included taking down grades 5 and 6 long exposure "solargraphs" that were installed in the greenhouse last September. Several sun-etched lines were visible on most cans, which demonstrates lights effect on the light-sensitive paper lining homemade pop can cameras. Grades 5 to 9 have since used these same devices to create hundreds of flashlight and other positive/negative experiments in our makeshift darkroom created by several eager Grade 7 students. Grades 9 to 12 as well as Grade 5 are also working on a variety of films. We have learned about storyboarding, creating a working narrative, blocking and staging a variety of shots, and the importance of continuity when planning scenes. Students have been creatively using the school for their film sets, including hallways, outdoors, and Aikins House, while capturing footage that will edited in the near future.

With all this, it is likely you are wondering whether there will be a screening of some kind. Indeed! We have booked Cinematheque (100 Arthur St.) in The Exchange District Tuesday, May 17 for a festival of student films made throughout 2015/16. Tickets will be $10 at the door. We hope to see you there!
