Brushbots bring STEAM learning to Kindergarten

On March 9, Kindergarten students were treated to a morning workshop introducing them to circuits, robotics, and more. Douglas Thomson from University of Manitoba and Richard Bernhardt from National Research Council showed us some simple circuits and then worked with us to build a simple robot using a toothbrush, battery, and motor plus wires. The vibration of the motor propels the bristles of the toothbrush, producing a scurrying BrushBot.

The girls also had the opportunity to explore several electronic devices such as a scribble bot, buzzers, fans, a sound-to-light circuit, and more. This was a great activity for the girls to explore while taking part in some discovery-based learning about technology. After the girls assembled their BrushBots, they took them to the atrium for an interhouse race. Although some BrushBots did not make it to the finish line, all of them were winners! Thank you to our guests for taking the time to share their passion for engineering with us.
