Staff began observing that the children were taking some items off the shelves to line them up in a strategic manner. Although we were unsure of their intent, we were certain of their interest as they resumed this activity throughout recent weeks. In true Reggio Emilia fashion, we discussed their intent and interest during one of our staff meetings.
We decided to extend their learning by adding a few items that would enrich their experience. Staff collected loose parts, containers, and other assorted items, including paper with squares and squiggles drawn, a long piece of wood, and some fabric. An area was set up so that the children would be able to work on their designs without fear of it being walked through. The children began to make several patterns using the loose parts. Each time another child approached this area, the outcome was different. They used their imaginations, and, each had a different story to tell. They might have been making soup, designing a house for a princess, or simply lining up the items.
It has been really fun to watch their individuality shine though. The area is still being used though is now waning. Staff will decide whether to add more items to maintain their interest or change the area completely as a result of new observations.
