Careers in design

Jennifer McDonald, University Guidance

Carla Pienaar graduated from Balmoral Hall School in 2001. Since then she has earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Hon.) from University of Manitoba. However, her passion is for design. Through education in industrial design at Emily Carr University in Vancouver as well as her current educational experience as a Master of Interior Design candidate, she works in the areas of product and interior design.

Her designs for Barkman Concrete have launched and are touring the continent's trade shows with overwhelmingly positive feedback. Carla recently spoke with Grade 8 students in our career awareness studies, which provide students with the opportunity to learn more about various professions directly from alumnae. She discussed the many steps involved in development throughout the process of design as well as factors to such as budget, clientèle, environment, lighting, electrical capacity, and so much more.

Also invited to her presentation were students from grades 9 to 12 who are interested in similar fields. Carla spoke with Anais Casselman-Green (product design, graphic design, and business), Ai Ming (Michelle) Tan (architecture or structural engineering), and Yi Lin (Rebecca) Sun (interior design) about their interests, offering them wonderful advice from her point of view.
