Gr. 12 student leads efforts to "Spread the Net" at BH

At Balmoral Hall School, we promote community and global awareness in our students through volunteerism, and encouraging our girls to become active in causes they are passionate about.

This year, we are asking the entire BH community to come together in support of the "Spread the Net" Student Challenge, as led by our Global Issues Prefect, Sara Ali.  Here, in Sara's own words, is what we are doing to support this important initiative:
Spread the Net – Student Challenge

My name is Sara Ali and I am the Global Issues Prefect this year at Balmoral Hall School and as one of my responsibilities, I lead the Senior School service group, Girls for the World. Our mission is to bring awareness to others about issues surrounding girls and women around the world and find meaningful ways to take action.

As one of my goals as prefect, I wanted to find ways to involve the entire BH community in an action project. Inspired by Julie Clark ’09 who first brought our attention to this issue, Spread the Net Student Challenge is an opportunity for Girls for the World and the Balmoral Hall community to get involved in small way and have a huge impact.  Plan Canada’s Spread the Net Student Challenge is a friendly, nationwide competition between schools to raise funds for lifesaving bed nets. Every minute a child dies from malaria – a preventable disease transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The simple solution is bed nets. Long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets act as a physical barrier, protecting children and their families from malaria-infected mosquitoes while they sleep. The top fundraising elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools are visited by Rick Mercer, co-founder of Spread the Net, and appear on an episode of the Rick Mercer Report!

Balmoral Hall students and staff are getting involved in fundraising through homeroom and house competitions, bake sales, raffle draws and through some friendly staff vs student challenges. More information will be sent home to families with specific details or if you want, you can also donate online.  Just 10.00 will help purchase one bed net and protect 2 people for up to 3 years. Help us reach our goal to raise $5000.00.

By supporting Girls for the World’s fundraising efforts, you play a vital role in the global fight against malaria! Over the last few years, the Spread the Net Student Challenge has helped support the provision of bed nets in Liberia, Rwanda, Uganda and Guinea. This year, funds raised through the Student Challenge will help protect families in Zimbabwe.

Bed nets save lives. You can too!

Thank you from all of us.
