We are excited to announce that Dr. Peter Markesteyn will be this year’s keynote speaker for the 4th annual Dr. W. Grant Beaton Lecture Series.
Dr. Peter Markesteyn was born, raised, and educated in The Netherlands. In the early 1960s, he came to Canada to practice medicine and then to Scotland to study Pathology. He subsequently held positions in the field of forensic pathology in Newfoundland, Alberta, and Manitoba.
Dr. Markesteyn was Manitoba’s Chief Medical Examiner for 17 years until his retirement in 1999. He was then asked by the Government of Canada to travel to Kosovo to begin the work of gathering evidence for the International War Crimes Tribunal (Yugoslavia). In 2001, he returned to Kosovo with funding from CIDA, The United Nations and a grant from the Rotary International Visiting Scholars program to help with the reconstitution of the Kosovo Institute of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Markesteyn has been involved in the preparation of legislative changes required in the establishment of medical examiner’s systems in Newfoundland & Labrador, Alberta, North Dakota, Manitoba, and Kosovo.
This annual lecture series brings high-calibre speakers to Balmoral Hall School to excite students about how the sciences connect to a multitude of disciplines, as well as to inspire them to consider the many ways in which the sciences and their applications can be part of their future careers.
