Student Life

At BH, the entire school – staff and students are divided into four groups called Houses. Houses compete against each other during the year in athletics, debating, and various spirited competitions. The four Houses, Glen Gairn, Craig Gowan, Ballater and Braemar were derived from places surrounding Balmoral Castle, the private residence of the British Sovereign.

From the many high turrets of Balmoral Castle, one of which is one hundred feet high, can be seen a commanding view of the surrounding districts. To the west can be seen Braemar, to the north Glen Gairn, while one mile to the south on the hill Craig Gowan stands. Nine miles to the east is the railway station of Ballater.
In the fall of the new school year, all new students entering Kindergarten to Grade 12 and staff are placed in Houses and receive a House pin. During the year, Houses accumulate points by participating, and placing in events. The House with the greatest number of points at the end of the year wins the House Trophy. This is presented to the outgoing House Head at the Closing Exercises in June.
