Alanna Flom, Class of 2014 (November 2019)

CAREER TALK WITH ALANNA FLOM '14

By Isis, Grade 8

On November 25, 2019, the Grade 8 class was fortunate to have Alanna Flom, Class of 2014, and a lifer, talk with us about her career and education. Ms Flom, who is currently working as a sales consultant at Birchwood Automotive Group, shared her Middle & Senior School experiences with us and gave us an idea of which courses we should take in high school to help us through the rest of our journey through Balmoral Hall and into university.

She talked about many things, but something that stuck with me was how she recommended being involved at school, whether that be as a prefect in grades 8 or 12 or by joining a team. She was also able to answer our many questions, which spanned a wide range of topics from the experience of international students at university to taking a gap year to whether or not to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Senior School. Some of her answers to those questions were: “Definitely try to become an international student if that is what you want to do, but make sure you are able to be away from home; If you decide not to go to university, I recommend getting a job right away; If you can handle AP courses, I definitely recommend taking them.”

There were many things I took away from her presentation. I understood that I should lay most of my groundwork in Senior School so that university will be a little easier, but also that when it gets hard, I should ask for help. She also helped me to see that once I get to university I will find a lot of new opportunities. Another thing she encouraged us to do was to get involved with volunteering, as it is an important factor in helping us gain experience. She helped me see that every day I am in school I am setting myself up for my future.
