Annie Luo, '15

BH Grad a guiding light.

By Jennifer Pawluk, Communications Specialist
If you have been a member of Balmoral Hall School's community at any time within the last four years, chances are you have heard the name Jing Lin (Annie) Luo many times. Since enrolling as an international boarding student in Grade 9, she has been involved in almost every extracurricular opportunity offered at one time or another.
Her commitments include Youth in Philanthropy, debate and public speaking, Model United Nations, Girls for the World, and more. The Craig Gowan House Head travelled to Poland in 2014 for a service learning experience, too.

"Reach out to others," encourages Annie, "because that's how friendship starts."
Born in Montreal, she has dual citizenship in Canada and China. Her hometown, Zhongshan, inspired her global issues project on the topic of homelessness last year, as she delivered presentations about homelessness to students at Mulvey School, in addition to her peers. To further her aim to increase public awareness about homelessness, Annie invited a guest, John Janzen, community education coordinator for Siloam Mission, to speak with grades 7 to 9, as well as Girls for the World students, in February 2014.

"You can see that she is genuinely interested in seeing change in any way that she can effect it," Mr. Janzen notes, previously reflecting on their work together. "Annie has a lot of motivation."

Indeed, Manitoba Council for International Education (MCIE) hosted a reception on November 17, 2014 in celebration of International Education Week, which she emceed along with Wan Ting (Arabella) Xie, who is also a Grade 12 student at Balmoral Hall School.

With such an impressive curriculum vitae (CV), including academic excellence throughout Senior School, her future is incredibly bright. Her post-secondary plans are to study ethics, society, and law at Trinity College with aspirations of practising law internationally. It is unsurprising that University of Toronto has awarded her an academic merit scholarship as she prepares to pursue her studies there this fall.

Citing Advanced Placement (AP) Literature & Composition as one of her favourite subjects, her writing has been published by Community News Commons one more than one occasion, notably in celebration of Kindness Day. A Grade 10 piano student, Annie shares her gift with others through teaching. Her painting of traditional Chinese ideas of fate drew admiring glances at the exhibition of The Cre8ivity Project earlier this year.

Inspiration is everywhere at Balmoral Hall School, she says.

"This has been a good environment for me to develop potential in doing things I never thought I could do before," Annie reflects, expressing her thanks to faculty, staff, and friends who have helped her during her time here.
All our best, Annie, and congratulations!
