Expanding knowledge of women's rights

By Anne, Grade 11, and Sara, Grade 12

On January 13, we had the pleasure of meeting Professor Marilou McPhedran from University of Winnipeg’s Global College, as she presented to a combined group of Girls for the World and Youth in Philanthropy members.

Marilou McPhedran is a lawyer, advocate, and educator who served as a UN Human Rights Fellow for the Geneva office of UNFPA in 2012. She is a tenured professor, Director of The Institute for International Women's Rights, and the course director for the Human Rights UniverCity summer program in cooperation with Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

It was a great opportunity for us to gain another perspective on women’s rights. Professor McPhedran shared her own experiences dealing with sexism throughout her career as well as the vast inequality that females face in developing countries. Hearing about her former struggles as a female leader in a male-dominated student council made us appreciate her resilience, and we admire her accomplishments. It was a significant learning opportunity for us that has raised many concerns that will carry on a conversation throughout the coming months.
