Junior Debate & Public Speaking

Irina Z., Jr. School Debate Prefect
On October 29, junior debaters participated in their first tournament. Debating the resolution: "This House Would Continue our Use of Resources for Space Exploration," we were able to consider the benefits, harms, and costs of this resolution. This event was not only the first tournament of the year, but the first tournament for Grade 7s and the first open tournament for most of the Grade 8s.

From Grade 7, we had Amy Mittal and Samah Haq as a team, and Adi Groumoutis as an "irongirl" (meaning that she debated both sides of the issue by herself). From Grade 8 three teams consisted of Karen Jensen and Grace Thomson, Lindsay Cogan and Lauren Burns, and Madeline Ritter and I. We all did extremely well, gaining a lot of knowledge about space exploration and different persuasion techniques.

The results for this tournament were as follows.

Novice: Samah Haq, top debater from Balmoral Hall School, 4th individually, and 6th as a team with Amy Mittal.

Open: Madeline Ritter, top debater from Balmoral Hall School, 3rd individually, and 3rd as a team with me; Lindsay Cogan & Lauren Burns, 6th as a team.

All competitors did very well at this tournament, and we definitely felt that this was a great accomplishment, as we had an opportunity to go to infinity and beyond with something that requires a lot of skill and confidence. We look forward to the next tournament, and encourage many more of you to come out and debate.
