STEVEN MACDONALD - DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY / HEAD COACH VARSITY PREP TEAM

 

Steven Macdonald has been involved in coaching for over 14 years and has coached at all levels ranging from weekend and summer development camps to male University hockey with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gee's and female Midget AA with the River East Lightening capturing the provincial championships in 2003-04 and representing Manitoba at the Western Canadian championships.  in 2008 he was appointed as the Provincial Head Coach of Hockey Manitoba's female U18 hockey team who competed at the U18 Canadian National Championships November 5 - 9, 2008 in Napanee, Ontario winning a Bronze Medal.  He currently holds his High Performance I Hockey Canada Coaching Seminar as well as theory levels 1, 2 & 3 in the current National Coach Certification Program (NCCP).  He is also actively involved with Hockey Manitoba as a coach mentor in the National Coach Mentorship program, an Assistant clinic coordinator, Regional evaluator and bench coach for the Female Program of Excellence, SportPsych consultant to the Canada Winter Games teams, and the equipment manager for the Men’s hockey team at the most recent Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon where the team captured the silver medal.  This past summer he was priveleged to attend the Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island as Mission Staff for Rowing.  He also volunteers his time to assist with administering coaching clinics in Manitoba.  In 2008 he was privileged to travel to St. Louis to spend time with Andy Murray as well as be a guest group leader at Hockey Canada's female U22 team May strength and conditioning camp.  For the 2009 - 2010 season he was also the Video Coordinator for the UofManitoba Bison's Women's hockey team.

Most recently Steven has been named to Hockey Canada's national team coaching pool and will be attending Hockey Canada's August selection camp in Toronto, Ontario as an assistant coach within the National U-18 program.

Currently Steven is entering his 4th season in the BH Hockey program and is responsible for all aspects of the hockey program as Director of hockey as well as Head coach of the Varsity Prep team.

Steven received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg in 2005 with a Double major in Kinesiology & Applied Health and Psychology.  He then attended the University of Ottawa for his pre-masters in Sport Psychology before returning home to complete his masters at the University of Manitoba specializing in Coach education.  He is actively involved in the field of Sport Psychology and has worked as a Sport Psych consultant in a variety of sports including athletes competing at the Canada Games specializing in athlete development and performance enhancement.

BRENNA LEARY - ASSISTANT COACH VARSITY PREP

 

Brenna recently graduated from the University of Manitoba where she was a member of the Bison's Women's Hockey team for the past 5 years capturing a Canada West Title in her final year to go along with 3 National bronze medals in four trips to the CIS Nationals.   She was also named as a Canada West 1st team All-star two seasons from 2007-2009 in addition to a 2nd team All-star nomination in 2006-07.  Prior to UofM she played for the University of Winnipeg club team who attended the Esso Women's National Championships.

Brenna graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Criminology and is presently applying to the Winnipeg City Police.  Following her career as a Bison she also participated on the Manitoba Provincial Women's Ball hockey team and placed second at the most recent National championships held here in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  She holds her coach level certification in addition to being a certified referee.

BRYAN WILLIAMS - HEAD COACH JUNIOR VARSITY / FACULTY

  Began his coaching career as an instructor at the International Goaltenders’ School (IGS), ending up as the head instructor for the final 5 years on tour.  Spent 6 seasons in the Minor Peewee and AA Peewee Twins in the Pembina Trail Twins program. He currently runs a AAA Boys Spring League hockey program called Glacial Ice, which runs each year from March until June. This is Bryan's second season with the BH High School Hockey team.

JARED COOK - ASSISTANT COACH JUNIOR VARSITY / FACULTY

  Jared Cook is a full-time teacher at Balmoral Hall School. Endeavouring to become more involved in both the academic and athletic development of students, he has dedicated himself to coaching. In December of 2004, he earned his coaching certification from Hockey Canada and is entering his fifth year as an Assistant Coach and Manager with the Balmoral Hall High School Hockey Team.

JULIE HAYWARD - ATHLETIC THERAPIST / STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

  A graduate of the University of Manitoba Athletic Therapy Program, Julie has an extensive background in elite level sport both as an athlete and more recently in the Athletic Therapy field. As a member of the Canadian National Team for 5 years, Julie traveled to competitions throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, and also had the opportunity to win a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. As an Athletic Therapist she enjoys working with athletes who have similar drive and passion. Julie continues her academic pursuits working to complete a Master’s degree in biomechanics, and looks forward to a great season with the Blazers.

DARLENE SVEINSON - HEALTH AND WELLNESS COORDINATOR / FACULTY

  Off-Ice Strength & Conditioning Trainer, Certified Yoga Instructor, Manitoba Certified Group Fitness Leader, Jr. School PE/HE teacher, B.Ed.

Darlene’s extensive knowledge and experience with fitness, physical education and yoga adds an elite athletic component to the Balmoral Hall Blazers Hockey Program. She has been a fitness leader and trainer in and outside of Manitoba for 26 years and a physical educator at Balmoral Hall School for the past 13 years. Darlene has always been on the cutting edge of new disciplines in fitness. In 1997 she became a certified Hockey Canada coach which enabled her to apply her vast knowledge of fitness to training hockey players. Darlene utilizes hockey-specific training techniques to push participants to a higher level of athleticism while developing speed, power, agility and improved on-ice performance. She has trained male and female hockey players from novice to Midget AAA and High School, and is the off-ice conditioning trainer for Max Hockey School during the summer. Darlene’s strength is blending her diverse experience with a variety of training disciplines into a dynamic, multi-faceted conditioning program.

Darlene resides in Winnipeg with her hockey-coaching husband, Jeff and their hockey-playing sons, Taylor and McClay.
