The Blazers Skating and Hockey program continues the BH tradition of using the best practices in girls learning and development to ensure success. BH is leading the way in demonstrating how girls can achieve when provided the opportunity to learn and grow in ways that suit them best.
A key goal of our hockey program is to provide our student athletes with the high performance hockey experience they will need to ensure a smooth transition to the post-secondary athletics environment through the integration of learning and athletic development to the highest possible level.
Within the Academy of Excellence, the hockey program endeavors to provide an environment conducive to the development and advancement of players of all ages and abilities. During the months of September to March, the ‘in-season’, the BH Blazers program includes a Prep team which competes in an international Junior Women’s League (JWHL), a high school team competing in the Winnipeg Women's High School Hockey League, a hockey skills development program for grades 6 - 12, as well as a Junior School skating program that is integrated into the BH athletics curriculum.
Following these months and during the ‘off-season’, hockey in the Academy of Excellence undertakes a developmental hockey skills program at the developmental and elite levels. The ‘off-season’ months of skill sessions and player development run in April and May with the Showcase occuring in July. These sessions focus on developing the skating, puck skills, and hockey sense of the individual athlete in a supportive and challenging environment and is open to the public.
The Balmoral Hall hockey program and the Academy of Excellence is committed to providing our student-athletes with the experiences necessary to believe in themselves, which allows them to achieve their academic, athletic, and personal goals.
Core Philosophy
We believe that in order to grow and improve a player must expand her comfort zone by developing skills in a challenging and supportive environment. A goal is to focus on teaching the game and not just explain "what" to do but the "how" and "why" skills are taught and how they can make you a better hockey player.
On-ice skill development
As we seek to teach the game through skill execution and repetition players will be moved through progressions leading to combination of skills and game like situations. On-ice sessions will focus on teaching skills through feedback and correction in small area drills and games that are designed to heighten awareness and challenge players. Skills of puck control, transitional skating, agility, individual tactics, as well as position-specific skills will provide the basis for on-ice sessions.
Off-ice skill sessions
New to 2010, our Provincial Elite camps will include off-ice sessions prior to each on-ice session. These off-ice sessions are designed to supplement the on-ice development and will isolate skills related to stickhandling, balance, and agility.
Goaltender benefits
In both the Strength on Skills and Provincial Elite sessions goalies will benefit from small area skills and drills in addition to guest goaltender instructors at some of the sessions to provide more specific feedback and direction.
