JV Blazers bounce back in a big way....
Jan. 20, 2012
|
| After their first loss of the season on Tuesday, the JV Blazers were in a bad mood entering today's game against the second place team from Dakota. It didn't take long for the Blazers to get it going, as they scored 3 times in the first 10 minutes and added another before the period ended. The second period was much of the same, with the Blazers adding two more goals to hold a 6-0 lead after two periods. The third period was a lot tougher, with many penalties going to both sides. The Blazers would add 1 more goal to win 7-0. It was a very important game for the JV Blazers to get back on track. The team reacted extremely well to the loss and got back to their winning ways. |

JV Blazers take gold at King's Edghill "Birthplace of Hockey Tournament" in Windsor, NS...
Jan. 16, 2012
|
The JV Blazers travelled to Nova Scotia this past weekend for the King's-Edgehill School "Birthplace of Hockey" Tournament. The JV Blazers played well throughout the tournament, remaining undefeated through some stiff competition. The team also had the chance to tour Acadia university with BH Alum Robyn Zajac '08, as well as meet up with more recent BH JV Blazers Alums Jacklyn Prendiville '10, Emily Livingston '10, and Cody Keith '11.
Here are the scores:
Round Robin:
Blazers 2, Northumberland 1
Blazers 6, King's-Edgehill 1
Blazers 14, Parkview 0
Semi-Final:
Blazers 7, North Nova 0
Final:
Blazers 3, CEC 1
The JV Blazers played the tournament final vs. Nova Scotia's Provincial Champs, Cobequid Education Centre (CEC). The Blazers came out strong and scored first, when Kayla Karbonik scored an early goal. CEC battled hard and pushed back but the Blazers were strong through the end of the period and held the lead 1-0 after 1 period. The second period was a different story, with CEC holding the edge of play, until Blazers Tess Bracken found a way to put the Blazers up 2-0. The two goal lead was short-lived as CEC continued to press and scored halfway through the period to make the score 2-1. As the third period began, the Blazers vowed to hold the lead and bring home the title, but with 6 minutes left, and a slim 2-1 lead, the Blazers took two penalties 30 seconds apart. A 5 on 3 advantage for CEC for over a minute and a half threatened to spoil the party for the Blazers.
But an incredible penalty kill by the Blazers lead to a Blazers goal immediately following the penalties, as Tess Bracken scored with 2:30 left in the game to seal the deal. The Blazers scored once more with 6 seconds left, Allison Sexton scored a very nice goal, leaving only the celebration to go!
Mission Accomplished! JV Blazers win Gold Medal! |

JV Blazers open second half of season with win over big rivals...
Jan. 10, 2012
|
| The JV Blazers started the second half of the season the same way they finished the first half...by winning. The Blazers faced a motivated team from St. Mary's on Monday, in both teams first game after the holiday break. The game was scoreless for around 10 minutes before Brooke-Lyn Riley '15 scored following a brilliant centering pass from Allison Sexton '15. Kati Tabin '15 scored with less than 1 second left in the first period to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead. The teams continued a very impressive pace for the majority of the second period, which saw the Blazers score again to make it 3-0, before St. Mary's found a way get some momentum with a goal of their own. But Sarah Hnytka '14 made it 4-1 Blazers, with a goal late in the second period. A short-benched Blazers team began to slow down in the third, but were able to keep pressing and battling hard for the final 20 minutes. Both teams scored twice in the third period, Sarah Hnytka and Allison Sexton got the last two Blazers' goals, giving the JV Blazers their 10th victory in 10 games in league play and an overall season record of 19 wins and 0 losses. Next up is a battle for 1st place in the league against the Dakota Lancers on Wednesday at 4:50pm at the MTS Iceplex. |

JV Blazers close out first half of season with a solid effort...
Dec. 7, 2011
|
|
The JV Blazers completed the first half of their season at home against the Portage La Prairie Saints. Another slow start dampened the spirits of the shorthanded Blazers, but the girls kept plugging away and finally found the net midway through the first period. With a 1-0 lead after the first period the Blazers were poised to pour it on during the second period. But far too many penalties by the Blazers, an impressive Portage goaltender, and tight defensive zone coverage by the Saints kept the 1-0 score through the second period as well. With their perfect season on the line, the Blazers vowed to make the third period their best of the game...and they did not disappoint. The Blazers came out firing and ended up scoring 4 times in the final frame to win 5-0. The JV Blazers out-shot their opponents 50-5 and won their ninth straight league game (9 wins, 0 losses in the regular season) and improved their overall season record to 18 wins and 0 losses.
The JV Blazers will play their 11 remaining regular season games in the New Year and they will also travel to Windsor, Nova Scotia to participate in the King's-Edgehill School - High School Hockey Tournament from January 12-15, 2012. If you haven't seen this team play by now, be sure to check the schedule when the season resumes in January 2012. The Blazers first game back will be against the St. Mary's Flames on the first day of school after winter break (January 9, 2012 at the MTS Iceplex).

JV Blazers remain undefeated...
Dec. 6, 2011
|
| It took a while to get going again, but the JV Blazers did not disappoint in their eighth victory in as many games this season. The Blazers jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Westwood on Monday afternoon and kept pressing through two periods. A hard working Westwood team, along with a strong outing by their goaltender, kept the score at 2-0 after 30 minutes of play. The JV Blazers seemed to dominate the entire game, but had trouble finding the back of the net. The Blazers proved to be too strong in the third, which seems to be a developing trend this year, managing to score 3 times in the third period to secure a 5-0 win. Kathleen Kosior '15 stopped all 13 shots she faced, while the Blazers fired 47 shots on Westwood's goal. This win keeps the Blazers' perfect record in tact, at 8 wins and 0 losses. Next up for the JV Blazers is their final game before winter break on Wednesday December 7th at the MTS Iceplex against Portage La Prairie @ 4:50pm. Come cheer on the girls for the last time in 2011! |

Prep Blazers win 3 of 4 in Warner - hold on to first place in JWHL
Dec. 5, 2011
|
|
The BH prep squad traveled to Warner Ab. over the weekend to play 4 western JWHL games. The Blazers opened against the Pacific Steelers from Vancouver. BH beat the Steelers 8-0 during their last meeting in Winnipeg and picked up where they left off by once again hammering the Steelers 9-3. Ashleigh Brykaliuk recorded her first hatrick of the year and Taylor Woods collected 3 assists. Tracy Schick made 18 saves. The first game Saturday saw the Blazers facing the Thoroughbreds from Minnesota. BH was fresh off of a 9-1 victory against the T-Breds during their own tournament in St. Paul last weekend. This game proved to be much closer but the Blazers secured the 2 points with a 6-5 victory. Skye Kelly lead the way with her first hatrick of the year and Rebecca Babiak recorded 2 assists.
The evening game saw the Blazers facing the Edge School from Calgary. All previous games vs Edge had been tight checking, close games. The Blazers played one of their best all around games of the year and closed out a strong Edge team 4-0. Meghan Dufault lead the way with 3 goals and Taylor Woods added 3 assists. Tracy Schick recorded her 2nd shutout as a Blazer. The final game vs Warner was a barn burner with high speed intensity, as well as great end to end action. Warner would open the scoring in the first 2 minutes with a powerplay goal. The Blazers came storming back to take the lead 2-1 and held it till the 3 minute mark of the third. Warner tied it up and then completed their comeback banging in a rebound off the crossbar with 18 seconds left in the game. Taylor Woods and Skye Kelly scored for BH. Meghan Dufault had 2 assists. Rachel Dyck had a solid game in goal and made 23 saves.
The 3 wins for the Blazers ensured that they hold on to first place overall in the JWHL with a record of 14 wins 2 losses and 1 tie for 29 points. NAHA and Warner remain tied for 2nd place with 27 points a piece.
The team now has a lengthy break from league play and will not see action until the next East/West match up in Minneapolis in mid-January. For more detailed stats and info on all league play over the weekend, please visit the JWHL website at www.jwhl.org

JV BLAZERS face a very familiar foe...
Dec. 1, 2011
|
| The JV Blazers played one of their biggest rivals on Wednesday afternoon, as the St. Mary's Flames tried to ruin the JV Blazers' perfect season. Playing a few players shorthanded, the JV Blazers managed to score first with Megan Ross '13 finding the back of the net midway through the first period. The Flames replied quickly on a powerplay and managed to hold off the Blazers through the first period. With the score tied 1-1 to begin the second period, the Blazers came out very strong and refused to back down, as Tess Bracken '15, Paige Craig '14, and Allison Sexton '15 each scored in the second period to give the Blazers a 4-1 lead. More of the same pressure by the Blazers greeted the Flames in the third period, as BH scored two more goals and didn't allow any against to make the final 6-1. Kathleen Kosior '15 was very strong in net, stopping 12 of the 13 shots she faced. This win moves the JV Blazers to 7 wins and 0 losses in the regular season. Next up for the Blazers is a game against Westwood on Monday, December 5th (4:00pm) at Keith Bodley. |

JV BLAZERS pushed to the limit...
Nov. 29, 2011
|
| The JV Blazers were held off the scoresheet today...for two periods. A three week layoff seemed like a good excuse for a rusty JV Blazers squad who entered the third period against Sanford Collegiate tied at 0-0. While it was a fast-paced first two periods, the JV Blazers couldn't find any rhythm offensively but managed to play well enough defensively to stay tied. The Blazers refused to use the layoff as an excuse during intermission and came our firing in the third period, scoring three times to keep their perfect season going with a 3-0 victory. Tess Bracken '15 had two goals and Allison Sexton '15 added the other one. Robin Thiessen '14 was perfect in net again, as she lowered her goals against average to a league leading 0.25 (which means she is allowing about 1 quarter of a goal per game). The win moved the JV Blazers to 6-0 in regular season and 15-0 overall. Next up is a date with their bitter rivals the St. Mary's Flames on Wednesday @ 4:50 at the MTS Iceplex. Come cheer on the girls if you can!! |

Sioux add six during early signing period for 2012-13
Nov. 17, 2011 |
|
GRAND FORKS, N.D. –University of North Dakota women’s hockey head coach Brian Idalski announced today the addition of Meghan Dufault, Tanja Eisenschmid, Samantha Hanson, Rebecca Kohler, Samantha LaShomb and Marissa Salo to play for the Sioux beginning in 2012-13.
“We were able to acquire some quality kids up front, Idalski said although we feel like we are pretty deep at forward.” They were some of the best players to come out in this recruiting class and couldn’t pass them up” Idalski said. “We also wanted to shore up our team defensively and get a little more offense from our blue line. We feel we brought in some solid offensive D that can shoot the puck and create offense in transition.” Overall we feel this is an outstanding recruiting class character, skill and work ethic wise”
“Our last two classes have been tremendous. These kids are going to be players for years to come and keep us up where we want to be and that is in national contention and playing for championships.”
Meghan Dufault – Winnipeg, Manitoba (Do-FOE)
A dynamic offensive threat from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dufault was named Canada’s Best Forward in the 2011 World U18 Championship held in Stockholm, Sweden, where she had eight points (2-6-8) in five games played to lead Canada to a silver medal. A 2-time Hockey Canada U18 Selection Camp invitee, she also played in the USA/Canada Mini Series assisting Canada to a 2-1 victory.
In the 2011 Canadian Women’s under -18 Provincial Championships in Saguenay, Quebec Meghan lead Team Manitoba to a bronze medal.

The daughter of Ken Dufault and Karen Dufault, she plans a career in medicine.
Idalski said: “Dufault is probably one of the most dynamic kids coming out in the 2012-13 class offensively. She sees the ice well, distributes the puck and can put the puck in the net. She is going to be a top forward for us and going to really give us another shot in the arm as far as scoring depth.”
Dufault on choosing UND: “During my visit I felt that I was at home. The coaches and players made me feel that I could be part of something very special. The strong academics and athletics program, along with a beautiful facility and campus, secured my decision to become a Fighting Sioux.”
The BH Blazer prep squad solidified their hold of 1st place in the JWHL with four straight wins during their host weekend at Iceplex. It was a tight checking first period that saw the Blazers get ahead 2-1 after 15 minutes. The second period was a different story, as the JV Blazers took control early in the second and found the net 4 times to take a 6-1 lead into the third period. The JV Blazers turned out to be too strong for the visitors from Vincent Massey and scored 4 times in the third period, while only allowing 1 goal. JV Blazers stun defending WWHSHL champs
Nov. 3, 2011
|
|
It wasn't too long ago that the JV Blazers watched the Oak Park Raiders celebrate the semifinal series win in Game #3's shootout. While today's game lacked the tension and the loads of 'Pack the Plex' fans from last March, the JV Blazers kept the painful loss in the back of their minds as they faced off against the Raiders for the first time since.
It was a fast paced game at the beginning, with JV Blazers' Robin Thiessen '14 making a number of great saves early on. The JV Blazers found the net first when Sarah Hnytka '14 scored on a breakaway. The Blazers scored one more time in the first period, and again in the second period to take a 3-0 lead into the final frame. The JV Blazers were able to kill off all 4 Oak Park powerplays in the game, including a 4 minute double minor, with impressive positioning by the penalty killers and great goaltending. While Oak Park continued to stay in the game, the JV Blazers kept pushing for the 4th goal. Finally, Kayla Karbonik '14 scored early in the third period to give the Blazers a 4-0 lead.
The Blazers didn't let up and eventually found the net 4 more times in the third period to win 8-0. It wasn't a league semifinal, but the team felt good about a very well played game. Kathryn Lukowski '13 had a natural hat-trick (3 goals in a row), Kayla Karbonik '14 had 2 goals, and Sarah Hnytka '14, Kati Tabin '15, Allison Sexton '15 each scored once. Robin Thiessen '14 stopped all 31 shots she faced, for her second shutout of the season.

JV Blazers win Husky Invitational
Oct. 30, 2011
|
|
The Junior Varsity Blazers entered the weekend with the goal of winning the Sturgeon Heights Huskies Tournament for the second time in three years. Facing the West Kildonan Wolverines and the Kenora Broncos in the round robin, the Blazers took first place in their pool with wins of 8-0 and 3-2.
In the quarter-finals on Saturday morning, the Blazers came out strong, firing 20 shots in the first period. The Fort Frances Muskies held tight with some great goaltending, but the final result was a 5-1 Blazers win. Going into the semi-finals on Saturday night, the Blazers prepared to face a familiar opponent in the St. Mary's Flames. Kayla Karbonik '14 led the rush immediately from the drop of the puck, scoring 4 goals in the first period alone. The Blazers never looked back, as Allison Sexton '15 added a hat-trick of her own and a 9-3 win moved the team to the championship game.
In a rematch of Friday's round robin game, the team from Kenora pushed the JV Blazers to the limit again, opening the scoring. The JV Blazers answered back, scoring 3 goals in the next 3 minutes. However, Kenora never quit, scoring twice to make it 4-3. The JV Blazers came together quickly and found a way to slow the comeback by scoring 26 second later to lead 5-3 at the end of the second period. The Blazers refused to back down as the tournament came to end, scoring 4 more times to win the Championship by a score of 9-3. Kayla Karbonik '14 had a hat-trick, while Allison Sexton '15 and Kati Tabin '15 each scored twice.
It was a great weekend for the JV Blazers, as they prove once again to be the team to beat in the WWHSHL. Next up for the Blazers is a date with last year's League Champs from Oak Park at 4:45pm on Wednesday at Eric Coy Arena.

BH Blazers Varsity Prep Hockey wraps up preseason on a winning note
Sept 29, 2011
|
|
It may still be September, but the varsity prep hockey team has been very busy and hard at work for almost a month already. Training camp opened on Aug 29 with practices twice a day as well as “off ice” strength and conditioning.
The team opened the preseason with an exhibition series vs University of Manitoba Bisons. An excellent weekend of hockey as the team split with one of the strongest teams in the CIS, by winning the first game 6-3. The series featured a hard fought battle between the current BH Blazers and many of it’s star alums now playing with the Bisons. Taylor Woods lead the charge in game 1 with an amazing 4 goals and Rachel Dyck had a great outing in goal by turning away 24 Bison shots. The Blazers lost a hard fought 4-2 battle with the Bisons the next afternoon. Overall an excellent showing against a very strong opponent.
Fitness testing took place over the following week and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Darlene Sveinson was very impressed with the scores turned in by the team in all areas.
The squad headed west to Regina on Sept 23 -25 to take part in the inaugural Mandi Schwartz Challenge. The Blazers faced a tough University of Saskatchewan squad and were handed a 4-2 loss. Meghan Dufault and Ashleigh Brykaliuk each had a goal and an assist. The Blazers would face Team Alberta the next afternoon. The Blazers would jump out to an early lead; however, it was not enough, eventually finishing with a 4-3 overtime loss. Kelsey Saelens, Sara Barnabe, and Meghan Dufault all had a goal and an assist.
The Blazers Prep team would save their best performance for last. The University of Regina Cougars had just come off of 2 straight wins vs U Alberta and Team Sask. The Blazers earned a solid 3-1 victory backed by some excellent defense as well as goaltending. The goaltending duties were spilt by both Rachel Dyck and Tracy Schick. Together they turned away 26 shots. Meghan Dufault, Taylor Woods and Ashleigh Brykaliuk each scored, giving the Blazers a big boost heading into the start of the JWHL season.
Many of the Blazers Prep squad will be busy this coming weekend as Team Manitoba convenes for final evaluations. The team is off to Boston Thanksgiving weekend to begin JWHL league play.
