International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP)

 Balmoral Hall School has received “Candidate Status” to pursue the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6 - 10. (September 2008)

In today’s demanding world, our girls need an internationally relevant education in order to become true global citizens. MYP deepens and extends our emphasis on Global Education and service that is already central to the goals and philosophy of Balmoral Hall School.

IBO Mission Statement:
The MYP, like the PYP Programme, aims to “develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), for students in Grades 6 - 10, continues to build on the foundation laid down during their time in the Junior School Primary Years Programme (PYP).

The fundamental concepts that organize and shape the MYP are:

  • holistic learning, which connects subject knowledge and  grade levels;
  • effective communication, including second language acquisition;
  • and intercultural and global awareness

The IB Learner Profile
Balmoral Hall School has embedded the IB Learner Profile into our Portrait of a Graduate as part of our MERIT Portfolio. These attributes infuse the curriculum and enhance development of an internationally-minded critical and creative thinker and lifelong learner.

The student, represented in the center of the diagram, is the center of all MYP instruction.

  • Eight content areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Language B (French or Spanish), Technology, The Arts (visual art, dance and music), Physical Education and Healthy Lifestyles. Rather than providing a specific written curriculum, the IB provides an educational framework which complements and supports our provincial outcomes, allowing us to offer an enriched learning experience. They are all equally important to the well-roundedness of the student.
  • Curriculum is organized through Five Areas of Interaction serving as “lenses” through which students explore ideas, make connections across subjects, investigate, inquire and apply their knowledge to real world issues, problems, and concerns.

Health and
Social Education
 How am I changing? How can I look after myself and others?
