BH Education

The BH Education Model combines the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate program with “best practices” in teaching and learning for girls and young women.

This model informs and guides our curriculum development in each of the six pillars of the MERIT Portfolio Program. It connects the IB Learner Profile with a vision of learning described in our Portrait of a BH Graduate.

Each of the 6 areas represents an integral part of our well rounded program. Students take an active role in making this vision a reality.

Each pillar introduces the attributes of our students and describes the uniqueness of the BH experience.

The Academic Pillar introduces the curriculum model and course selections for each level of the BH education. The academic areas are aligned to provide continuity and a progressive build up of good learning habits, self-confidence and thorough understanding of the academic subject areas. At each developmental level, girls' ways of learning are emphasized, making the classes more fun and meaningful.

The Arts and Technology Pillar provides the focus on developing the IB attribute of Human Ingenuity. Here students gather for the arts and culture that embraces cutting edge innovation, technology and expression. Students explore and appreciate the human capacity to invent, create, transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life. They have the opportunity to be immersed in multiple forms of expression and information communication technologies.

The Physical Education and Healthy Lifestyles Pillar focuses on educating the whole person and prepares students to be healthy and make informed choices as identified in the IB attributes of Health and Social Education.

The Community Service and Global Awareness Pillar focuses on the IB attribute of Community Service. Students focus on global awareness, international understanding and an appreciation of cultural diversity.

The Personal Management and Leadership Pillar embraces the IB Approaches to Learning and provides students with the transdisciplinary skills to enable them to take responsibility for their own learning. This involves articulating, organizing and teaching students engagement skills, attitudes and practices that students require to become successful learners. Students are actively involved in learning effective study skills and making good decisions using critical thinking skills.

The Participation in Co-curricular Activities Pillar introduces students to a variety of IB learning environments. Students must cope with everyday environmental situations at school or in their immediate surroundings that require cooperation and decision-making. Students are confronted every day with global environmental issues of a political and economic nature that require balanced understanding.
